Hall table
A simple, but effective Ash table, exploring the technique of steam bending. The design features double steam bent legs and a through tenoned under frame. This table is designed to stand in a hallway, landing, or behind a sofa, its slimline proportions making it perfect for these areas of the home. Made in Ash and finished in a thin water based lacquer to preserve the natural pale colour of the timber.
Frame
The frame of this table was designed to explore the traditional technique of steam bending. Each leg was made in two parts, each bent separately over different formers to create different curves. These pieces were then laminated together to form a double curve. The underframe is also steam bent. This time, two pieces were bent over the same mould and then turned back to back so that they produced an ‘X’ shape. These rails could then be through jointed into the legs.
Steam bending
The interesting shapes and details found in the design of this table were achieved by steam bending. This is the process of steaming components to allow moisture back into the cells of the timber to make it more flexible. The components can then be bent over a former and, once dry, they keep their formed shape. Ash is a particularly good timber for steam bending because of its grain structure, allowing moisture to be re-absorbed easily.
